Design Project and Thesis

Preliminary Information

  • Our students conduct their projects in groups of 2–3 as part of the KOM4321 Design Project and KOM9000 Capstone Project courses. For the Fall 2025–2026 semester only, students may also work individually on the KOM9000 Capstone Project course. These students must contact the advisors they wish to work with and determine their project topics.
  • Starting with the Fall 2025–2026 semester, the originality of projects will be checked using Turnitin, and projects found to have more than 25% plagiarism will not be accepted.
  • Study groups must designate a team leader from among their members. The designated team leader will also be the team member responsible for filling out the e-forms. Only team leaders should fill out the e-forms.
  • Registration and submission processes are conducted via e-forms, while presentations are held in person.

Appointment of a Consultant

In order for working groups to have advisors assigned, only team leaders need to fill out the e-registration form below. Details regarding advisor assignment registration are as follows.

  • Work group requests for advisor assignments will be processed exclusively through the online registration form.
  • Since the form cannot be resubmitted, please ensure that the information is accurate.
  • Groups for which advisor assignments will be made must also be enrolled in the relevant course on OBS. Students who are not enrolled in the course on OBS must submit their course add/drop requests in person to the department secretary’s office.
  • The e-registration form must be completed during the first week of classes. The deadline for the form is specified within the form itself, and a reminder announcement regarding this matter is issued at the beginning of the semester.
  • If students receive financial or academic support from external institutions, they must provide the necessary information.
  • Since advisor assignments are made based on the advisors’ group quotas, students are given the option to select alternative advisors. Accordingly, study groups will select a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 3 advisors in order of priority.
  • An advisor selected by more study groups than their group quota allows will be granted the right to choose the groups they prefer. For this reason, it is recommended that study groups consult with the advisor they wish to work with.
  • Advisor assignments will be made from highest to lowest priority based on the fulfillment of group quotas, ensuring that each advisor is assigned an equal number of working groups.
  • Groups that cannot be assigned to their chosen advisors will be assigned to other advisors whose quotas have not yet been filled.

Implementation of the Project/Study and Preparation of the Interim Report

  • Students are required to meet regularly with their academic advisors, and there is a minimum attendance requirement of 70%.
  • Study groups are required to write interim reports on the work they have completed as part of the course and submit them during midterm week.
  • The originality of the reports will be checked using Turnitin, and any work found to contain more than 25% plagiarism will not be accepted.
  • The language of the report must be English for groups that include at least one student enrolled in a 100% English-language program (the interim report format must be translated into English), and Turkish for groups that do not include any students enrolled in a 100% English-language program.
  • Working groups will have until the week following midterm week to submit their interim reports; a reminder announcement regarding this will be posted before midterm week.
  • The interim report must be completed in accordance with the format provided below and submitted via the e-form exclusively by team leaders.

Submission and Presentation of the Assignment

  • Working groups are required to write a final report on the work they have done as part of the course, to be submitted during Final Week. For KOM4321 Design Project, the assignment is a Poster and Final Report (the interim report format must be used; depending on the advisor’s preference, this may be a continuation of the interim report or a new report), while for KOM9000 Capstone Project, the assignment is a Bachelor’s Thesis. Please contact your advisor for details.
  • KOM9000 Capstone Project groups will be directed to the New Graduate Survey created by the Alumni Relations Committee after filling out the e-submission form. They are expected to complete the survey collaboratively as a group.
  • The originality of the submitted work will be checked using Turnitin, and any work found to have more than 25% plagiarism will not be accepted.
  • The projects uploaded by groups that have completed the e-submission form will be uploaded to Turnitin by the committee, and plagiarism reports will be generated by the committee.
  • Group leaders who complete the e-submission form will automatically receive a membership email from Turnitin so they can download the plagiarism reports. Group leaders are expected to sign up for Turnitin using the email address provided and download the plagiarism reports generated by the committee.
  • The plagiarism reports downloaded by the working groups must be emailed to the advisor.
  • The language of the paper and poster must be English only for groups with at least one student enrolled in a 100% English program; for groups without such a student, the language may be either Turkish or English.
  • Working groups will have until the third day of final exam week to submit their final reports; a reminder announcement regarding this will be made before final exam week.
  • The final report must be completed in accordance with the formats provided below and submitted via the online form by the team leaders only.
  • Study groups will present their work to the jury at the end of final exam week. Presentations will last 15 minutes, and the presentation schedule will be published during the final exam week.
  • Presentations for KOM4321 Design Project groups will be conducted via a poster, while KOM9000 Capstone Project groups will present using the presentation files they prepare.
